When purchasing a new internal hard drive, the performance and reliability are among the top aspects. Performance refers to the hard drive's capacity for storage and the speed at which the device can write or read data. Reliability is defined as the capacity of the drive to store and retrieve information without any errors for a prolonged period. These are the top data storage and performance indicators:

Storage Capacity

Capacity is the amount of information the ssd internal hard drive is able to store by gigabytes (GB) and Terabytes (TB).

By 2023, commonly used capacities include the following: 256 GB, 512GB 1 TB, 2 Tb, and 4 TB. But, some manufacturers have launched commercial western digital hard drive with capacities of as much as 20 trillion TB. Laptops can store less than desktop hard drives.

Furthermore, there's an inconsistency between a capacity reported by the manufacturer and its usable capacity depending on the method used by manufacturers to measure storage capacity and the way operating systems view space. This means that a 1tb internal hard drive will hold around 931 GB of information.

Take note of this difference when choosing your desired size of storage.

Sequential and Random Read/Write Speed

Read/write speeds determine how quickly western digital external hard drive are able to store and access information.

The sequential speed is the amount of time it takes to write or read the data in a contiguous chunk. In the end, the sequential speed is more suitable for larger files such as creating backups, or streaming video.

Random speed determines how long the drive will take to write or read random data that is scattered throughout the disk. Random speeds can affect multitasking. For instance, launching multiple apps or managing a set of files that are smaller.

Speedier random and sequential speeds increase the experience for users.
